Poker comes in many forms, but a favorite here at Three Rivers Casino is Texas hold’em. If you’re new to casino games, read on for instructions on how to play poker.
Texas hold’em is played with a standard 52-card deck, and like other forms of poker, the objective is to win the pot with the best hand (here is a list of how hands are ranked). At the casino, we play No-Limit hold’em, meaning—you guessed it—there is no maximum limit on how much players can bet or raise.
When learning how to play poker, you’ll first want to understand the roles of big blind and small blind. At the hold’em table, the small blind is the player sitting directly left of the dealer, who usually places a bet of 1/2 that of the big blind. The big blind is the player sitting to the left of the small blind, and his or her bet is the minimum bet. After each hand, these positions rotate clockwise.
To begin each hand, each player is dealt two cards face down, which leads to the first round of betting or the “pre-flop” round. Players can either fold, match the bet placed by other players, or go all in. The next round of betting is the “flop” round, where the dealer places three community cards face up. Players do another round of betting. Then a fourth and a fifth community card are dealt, with an additional betting round between each.
If there are still two or more players participating after the last round of betting, a showdown occurs, when the final remaining players face off. Because Texas hold’em is a closed poker game, this is the only time cards are ever revealed during the hand, and only if it’s necessary. The player with the best hand wins the pot, and if players tie, the pot is split between them.
